The Thousand and One Nights

The thousand and one Night may seem to be more like a rated "R" movie than a fairy tale for children. Although, the thousand and one Night had violence, it also had deeper meanings. Many of Shahrazad's stories convey the message of good vs. evil. There is a demon, a spell, and the voice of regret. In other words, treat others with respect and they will treat you the same. Shahrazad's tales also provide the children with a sense of justice or warning; 'What goes around comes around'. In other words, all of the evil guys got what was coming to them. Her stories also tell the reader that, the "good guy" still felt sad about what had happened to show the children that no one had won. Although the "good guy" in the story eventually triumphs over evil, there is no rejoicing.

There are also lessons about being in a position of power. It is an enormous responsibility, not to be abused. When that power is abused by forcing others to do what you want or betray their trust, there will always are repercussions. Shahrazad's way of stopping the king was nonviolent and extremely subtle, yet effective. She also became the person in power by carefully manipulating the king with her stories. She led him to come to his own conclusions about how he should conduct himself in a position of power.

Faith & prayer played a major role in Shahrazad's stories, as well. The people who were had the horrific acts inflicted upon them never lost their faith in God. They prayed to him and asked for His help. God listened and granted them reprieve from the evil. The lesson learned is to, always have hope and faith; do not give up and you will be saved. ...
