The Things I Carry

Introduction

The Things They Carried” by Tim O'Brien deals with the responsibility, remorse, and the isolation and loneliness soldiers went through the war of Vietnam, chiefly due to the emotional immaturity of the soldiers. While they all carry heavy physical loads, they also all carry heavy emotional loads, composed of grief, terror, love, and longing.

Thesis Statement

In the novel, The Things they Carried by Tim O'Brien, the theme of loneliness and isolation of soldiers of war is expressed through the literary element of characterization.

Body

The “things that they carried” were based on the necessity. Among the necessities, or almost a necessity included can openers and pocket knives. They also carried CD-heat, watches, and cut chocolate and cards, and paint the law, and chewing gum, and cigarettes.
