About the Author

John Cheever was born on 27 May 1912, the son of a merchant and he attended Thayer Academy in South Braintree, of which he was expelled for alleged laziness and smoking. He moved to Boston, where he devoted himself to literary work. Later he worked among others as a university lecturer. His career as a writer was long and full of privations, finally the breakthrough came with the publication of his short stories, one of which appears in this book is a selection.
