The Status of the Mawali's

Introduction

Mawali (Clients) draws its roots in the Islamic history from the time when the Muslim Rulers were on the Rise and was expanding the land under the Islamic Rule. These people were those who accepted Islam, when their lands occupied by the Muslim Rulers or this fact can be phrased as when the Arab Rulers expanded and conquered the lands of Non-Arabs. These people were Muslims but were not Arabs (Lee, p.25).Mawali's treated badly under the Arab Rulers the Religion of Prophet Muhammad never spoke about anyone being inferior to the other, but Mawali's treated as if they were inferiors to their Arab Rulers. Irony is that the term Mawali translates as someone who is equal or is a companion.

Umayyad rule is less accepted by the Muslims around the world because of the fact that it lacked satisfactory alternative. The religion of Prophet Muhammad, who always spoke about equality, justice and peace, became a victim of differentiation on the basis of color, cast and religion under the rule of his own followers (Crecelius, p.65).Islam always portrayed all believers to be equal in the eyes of Allah and only on the basis of Taqwa one Muslim is superior to the other. Under the rule, of Umayyad, mawali's who converted into Muslims and were non-Arabs subjected to racial differentiation. Racial differentiation expanded widely in the Umayyad rule it grew to such an extent that Arabs and Non-Arabs went to different mosques. Before the rule, of the Omayyad's the intermarriages were quite common in Islam and never been an issue until the time of Omayyad's, in their reign intermarriages among the Arabs and non-Arabs saw decline(Randall.p.143).They paid those taxes which were not applicable on the Arabs; mawali's were not even treated as non-muslims. In fact, the non-Muslims under the Muslim rule had a better time as compared to their own Muslim brothers. When the Arabs occupied the disparate lands and expanded their territory under the Muslim rule they picked up the soldiers in the army form the local population in order to defend the land, but the mawali's never had the a chance to become part of the Muslim army. As a result, mawali saw the expansion of Muslim rule as the expansion of Arab rule only, and were turned against their Muslim brothers for the treatment that they received (John, p.214).

Economic Difficulties

Economics under the Umayyad rule, saw many up's, and down's there were patches where the prosperity was on the rise, and they were patches where people faced tough economic Conditions. Mawali's were majorly Persians, who converted to Islam. Under the Islamic rule, the non-believers paid the taxes in order to go for their pilgrimage, but this tax was also charged form the Mawali's despite the fact that they should been exempted because of the fact that they accepted Islam (Lee, p.98).Moreover, the non-Muslims paid the taxes on their lands and the Muslim land owners paid usher but the tax collected from the Mawali's were equal ...
