The Social Network: Critical Analysis

Introduction

The Social Network is a movie that is directed by David Fincher. It recreates the true story of Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook. The story goes that Zuckerberg is a student at Harvard University. Like all other Harvardites, he is also very talented. However, he is also a programmer and a techy. His friends give a suggestion that he create a website, like the other blogs that he made, which provides social networking abilities to Harvardites. Accordingly, he embarks on development of such website and names it 'the facebook.' This website provides Harvardites the ability to share important information and data, comment on each other's photos, share tips for getting hung up with campus girls, and do other things of the kind.

Here, it must be noted that the financing for the development of the website was provided by one friend of Zuckerberg. Then, the website is extended to other universities and schools in the United States. Then, Zuckerberg continues to expand the expanse and reach of the facebook. Meanwhile, he also meets one founder of a Silicon Valley company. Then, they agree to finance the website further and offer it to anyone located in any part of the world. This results in the immense popularity of facebook, which has now dropped 'the' from 'the facebook.' In a short time of six years, there are millions of users of facebook with millions of friends. Zuckerberg becomes a young or the youngest billionaire of the world (IMDb, 2012).

Analysis of the movie

The analysis of the movie reveals that there is a certain theme of the movie. This theme states that it is not possible to become a billionaire with millions of friends without harboring other enemies too. This is then, indeed, true as Zuckerberg also makes certain enemies. These are the earlier friend who provided funding for the website and the two twins who gave the idea for the website. Accordingly, they both sued Zuckerberg for infringement of intellectual property and stake in the business. This brings Zuckerberg to the courtroom where they are standing in front of the justices to determine the fate of the famous Facebook.

Right now Facebook is the premier website providing social networking services to individuals. It allows its members to get signed up for free membership. Then, they can add their friends and then can start interacting with them online. They can also start and do chat with their friends using the website. They also share photos, videos, apps, and other technical things with their friends. In this way, they are able to remain connected no matter the time and place. The logo of the website reads “Connect with your friends” (Facebook, 2012).

Hence, the prevalent theme of the movie is that no success comes without accompanying problems. The success of Zuckerberg was swiftly followed by his trial in which his own friends and acquaintances turned against him. The Winklevoss twins, played by Armie Hammer and Josh Pence, turn ...
