It is habitually marveled at commas, but It shows to be in a shrinking minority. The comma is in extract, though it is not yet extinct. In text jottings and e-mails, commas arise infrequently, and then often by misfortune (someone beats the incorrect key). Even on the issued sheet, commas are dwindling. Many yardstick ideals from my childhood (after, for demonstration, an introductory prepositional phrase) have become optional or, poorer, have been ditched.
