New terminology learned from the reading

Justice is the set of norms and rules that can regulate conduct between individuals, enabling, supporting, prohibiting and restricting certain behaviors or actions on human actions or institutions (Regoli, 2009). Our readings helped us a lot in getting the command over a practical and fundamental knowledge of crime, criminal laws and goals of American criminal justice system. We understood justice and its laws. It equips graduates who choose to pursue a master's, doctoral, and law degrees with a credible foundation in criminal justice. In the course readings, we learnt about the cores of criminal justice system (Miller, 2007). The term 'criminal justice' constitutes a system of governmental and institutional practices aimed at maintaining social law and order. It also involves prevention, detection and mitigation of crimes. The criminal justice personnel also apply criminal penalties to law offenders. This paper provides the basis and the prerequisites of criminal justice research. Specifically, the paper reviews the research essentials of law enforcement, an important constituent of the criminal justice system.

Law Enforcement after 9/11

The definition by the State Department has more importance in relation to law enforcement after the September 11, 2001 attacks, as terrorism has extended the law enforcement role to many areas including premeditated crimes and those stemming from political motives sourced from any of the sub-national groups or clandestine and anti state agents (Thistlethwaite & Wooldredge, 2010). Presently, the U.S. police force is granted a greater degree of surveillance powers in reaction to possible threats of crimes of all nature, including drugs and terrorism. The criminal justice system has gained great importance after the 9/11 tragedies (Regoli, 2009). The domestic terrorism is growing, especially given the fact the financial pressures are rising among the locals, and when immigration policies are lax. U.S Patriotic Act has demanded strict maintenance of educational records of all students; particularly those coming from abroad and precise measures are to be taken by law enforcement in this regard (Miller, 2007).

How will this new terminology and knowledge apply to a career in criminal justice?

The new terminology will be of particular significance for a successful criminal justice career. In fact, law enforcement is the most key element of criminal justice system. The practices by the law enforcement agencies reflect the justice because the result of these practices by law enforcement agencies is the peaceful environment (Thurman et al, 2000). The power that is given to the agencies helps them to maintain social control and reducing crimes in the environment. But all of the people may not be agreeing with this statement because sometimes the power is also utilized in a negative way as the black sheep's can be found in any department (Thistlethwaite & Wooldredge, 2010). But this is very rare in the world; the main and major impact of the power of law enforcement agencies is the promotion of peace and justice.
