The topic is this dissertation is “the relationship between mother eating and activity habits and child obesity in the Lumbee tribe. This research consists of five chapters including introduction, literature review, methodology, discussion, and conclusion. The end of this dissertation includes references.

The first chapter is introduction that includes the background of the topic, aim of this research, and ethical considerations. The second chapter includes the literature review. In the literature review section, a review of related studies has been presented. The third section includes methodology that has been selected to conduct this study. The fourth chapter has presented the findings of this dissertation. The findings of this study have been supported with discussion in order to explain results. In the end, a conclusion of the study has been presented.

Background of the Study

The prevalence of obesity in the United is increasing rapidly. In the United Sates, obesity is not common among adults but also children. According to an estimate, child obesity in the United States is 25%. A number of studies have been conducted to identify the reasons that are contributing towards increasing child obesity in the United States. These studies have identified diverse factors leading towards child obesity (Alexander et al, 2009).

The causes of increasing child obesity can be classified into different categories including behavioral, genetic, and environmental. The environmental conditions include the changing lifestyles and other environmental conditions in which modern generation is living. The sedentary lifestyle is often blamed of increasing obesity. The sedentary lifestyle has not only adopted by working professionals but also children and adolescents. A few years back, children and adolescents used to spend a large portion of their time on physical activities. However, in the current environment, children prefer to watch TV, and play video games.

The advertisements of fast food and its availability have changed the eating behaviors of both adults and children. There has been an increase in the number of single families in the United States. In addition, the number of working women is also increasing in the United States. As a result, parents have little or no time to prepare meal at home. On the contrary, a number of families, in the United States, prefer junk food. It is because junk food is readily available. In addition, it is a fast and inexpensive item.

Genetic conditions also play a vital role in increasing obesity. According to the current studies, genetic factors also play a vital role in influencing child obesity. The prevalence of obesity among pregnant women is likely to be transferred to offspring. In addition, the eating habits of mothers are also adopted by the child.
