The red room and elements of horror stories

Introduction

Human beings pass through variegated scores of feelings of joy, sorrow, happiness, excitement and love in their lifetime. Each feeling has its own taste, pleasure and pain. Similarly, feeling of fear has its own taste.

“…Let us discuss something about fear. But during the discussion we would not raise the pitch of our voices and we would not shout and scream. You and I will talk on rational basis. We would discuss the way in which the god fabric of things sometimes has a way of disentanglement with appalling suddenness”. (King Stephen 1981, 4)

An individual can experience the feeling of fear by various events of his or her life or by exposing to various horror stories, dramas and movies. Genre of horror occupies an indispensible position in the field of entertainment.

“One of the difficult genres to define is genre of horror, not because we don't recognize it when we read it, but because it is so broad. At its most basic, horror encompasses all stories in which the main purpose is to scare the reader. As horror writer Dale Bailey points out in Genreflecting, however, this is “what it does rather than what it is” (Bailey 2005, 420).

The objective of this paper is to give an outlook of horror stories and how these stories create its successful impact. Another reason is to explore why people prefer and like horror stories. The core objective of this paper is to particularly look at HG Wells work “The red Room”.

Horror is a genre that is most preferred by general public. Horror stories are quite effective and generally liked by all. Many authors of horror stories give reason that horror stories connect the readers with the sublime and provide readers opportunity to experience thrilling and intriguing feelings and emotions. According to Stephen King, people prefer horror stories because it provides escape from the real world's stressful life.

“The tale of monstrosity and terror is a basket loosely packed with phobias; when the writer passes by; you take one of his imaginary horrors out of the basket and put one of your real ones in—at least for a time”. (King Stephen 1981, 16)

HG Well's horror story “The red room” can be considered as one of the finest work in the genre of horror. In this story significance of environmental setting is indispensible. This story has earned many praises from its readers.
