CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Introduction

This study is based on identifying the prevalence of diabetes of type2 in Bangladesh. This chapter will discuss the problem and the factors of prevalence of diabetes type 2, it will also be focusing on aims and objectives of the study and further on it will highlight the theoretical perspective of the research study. The structure of the dissertation is also identified in the end of the chapter.

1.1 The Problem

Type 2 diabetes is a disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, that is to say, by too high a rate of glucose (sugar) in blood. This disease usually occurs in adults advancing age and affects more obese or surplus weight .The number of people with type 2 diabetes is constantly increasing and this trend is attributed to lifestyle, which is associated with physical inactivity and the obesity, and aging of the population (Laming, 2009). Globally, the International Diabetes Federation predicts that the number of diabetics could increase from 285 million in 2010 to 438 million in 2030(International Diabetes Federation, 2000). Type 2 diabetes usually occurs after age 40 years, but now reaching more and more children and adolescents, because of obesity that affects more and younger people. There are several other factors which are responsible for the prevalence of type-2 diabetes in Bangladesh (Shifalika 2010).

1.2 Prevalence of Type-2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of cases of diabetes. It occurs later in life. It is mainly due to a state of insulin resistance and is associated with overweight. The body of a person with type 2 diabetes is unable to maintain the levels of glucose in the blood and regulate blood sugar. In the long run, if blood glucose is lowered by treatment, it can cause serious health problems, such as cardiovascular problems. This chronic disease requires a personalize treatment and close monitoring by the individual and the medical team (Sekikawa & Tominaga, 2000). Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the foundation of the treatment. If these habits are not enough to lower the blood sugar levels, medications can be used (Naeem & Zumin 2009).

1.3 Aims and Objectives

The research has following aims and objectives to be achieved after the research is

To investigate the factors responsible for the current prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Bangladesh

To focus on the literatures which have elements about the recent prevalence of type 2 diabetes Bangladesh.

To identify the major issue which cause the high prevalence of diabetes type 2 in urbanizing rural community ...
