Heracles is a hero of Greek mythology. He was considered the son of Zeus and Alcmene, a mortal queen, and an adopted son of Host and grandson of Perseus through the maternal line. At birth, he received the name of Alcaeus or Alcides, after his grandfather Alcaeus. In Rome, as well as Western Europe, he is best known as Hercules, and some Roman emperors including Commodus and Maximian were identified with the figure.
