This film is based on a book written by Giles Foden. It is inspired by real events, even if it is largely fictional. Characters were in Uganda in the 1970s at the height of Idi Amin's dictatorial rule. James McAvoy plays a young Scottish doctor, Nicholas Garrigan, who, after a bizarre turn of events, is appointed by Amin (Forest Whitaker) as his personal physician. This sets in train a series of scenes where we are shown the more benign side to a despotic madman, once dubbed 'the Butcher of Africa'.
