CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Rational for the study
Autism in primary school children has mystified the practitioners and parents for a very long time. People have often confused it with sensory integration disorder because a numerous number of children, at the same time, are often found victim of both. However, sensory integration dysfunction is not specific to autism in any manner. Even then, the presence of sensory integration disorder in the children affected with autism is relatively high. On the basis of this, it is significant to study the ways in which sensory disorder impact children with autism.
Definitions of key terms
Sensory Integration Disorder
When the brain is not functioning in a natural, efficient manner and therefore, affecting function of the sensory system in the body, it is termed as Sensory Integration Disorder (also known as sensory integration Dysfunction). Under this situation, the brain in not processing or organizing the flow of sensory impulses in a manner that give the individual (in our case, primary school children) good, precise information about himself/herself or his/her world
Autism
The child with autism has been described as being in a world of his own and often appears as though he does not want other tor intrude in that world. If he learns to speak, his speech is often limited; the articulation of words may be all right, but the words frequently lack typical intonation and may sound monotonous and parrot like. In addition, the child with autism frequently does not show emotions in same way as other children.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is a mechanism through which victims of autism and sensory integration dysfunction are assisted to be trained for everyday common and might be necessary tasks. Therapist specialising in this field often alter the general situations for the victims to make it more conformable to learn essential tasks.
Relevance to Occupational Therapy
