Introduction

The great Depression of the 1930s was one of the most significant times of the American history.

The White Share croppers: Declining Agricultural prices

The white farmers also felt the adversities of the depression, as prices for the agricultural output decreased exponentially. The demand for the agricultural goods was relatively high, but the cost of these products never managed to increase dramatically. This resulted in the minimal revenues for the farmers, who were finding it difficult to keep their farms operational.

The African American: Racial Issues and unemployment

The African Americans were the target of vicious racism, as they were not provided with a fair opportunity to attain employment. The white employees were given first and second preferences, whereas the African Americans had to contend with absolute ignorance or biased treatment.

The Immigration of the Mexicans

The Mexicans also had to face discrimination in their job prospects, and similarly had a very limited number of job opportunities available to them. The Mexican individuals as a result took subsistence level wages, in order to support their extended families. The situation was so adverse in certain localities that the American born Mexicans were forced to abandon their homeland and migrate.

The depression had subjected the American society with its worst form of economic dilemma, where there was a severe lack of employment opportunities for the people. President Hoover showed valiant efforts for combating the evils of the depression, however the society was indifferent. The negative repercussions of the depression had caused the society to despise the government, and as a result Democrat candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt won through a landslide election (Godfield et Al, 2009).
