The Functionality of Deviance by Emile Durkheim

Introduction

“Deviance” is the set of behaviors and states that members of a group deemed inconsistent with their expectations, their standards or values ??and, thus, may generate their share of condemnation and sanctions. This means that the sociologist considers deviant actions and ways of being that are frowned upon and punished by most members of a group. This definition is not without ambiguities. We will try to dispel with the awareness that it is probably impossible to formulate a definition of deviance, which would be totally transparent. In the past two decades, crime has become a culture of crime and the fight against crime a different point of view. As its name implies, cultural criminology emphasizes the role of cultural symbols and styles shared the criminal sub-culture, mass media, dynamic, and factors related to the development of the offender, nature of the crime, or even criminal justice (Demny, pp 89).

Criminologists believe that these cultural factors should be considered, if we are to understand the various forms of crime: the victim in the street or at home the moment, as a group activity or group, or a problem, social concern and political family or the public. Cultural criminologists, for example, criminal sub-culture of how to recruit and retain a secret sharing of experiences, different clothing styles, unique way and speaking members. They studied the ways in which police officers through the police uniform to show their power and authority and specific language, and how the power of the criminal justice system is a symbol of the court or prison (Thomas, Pp 45).

Criminologists tend to focus on culture, media technology and mass media and processes, TV shows, popular movies; newspapers provide the crime, especially the images of criminals and criminal justice, which affect public perception. Likewise, to see how they defined as the politicians and members of Congress is more important than others for certain offenses, coding, and implementation of laws and policies in these definitions. From this perspective, the subject of crime and criminals is not just what they do, but it must understand the other crime, the specific meaning that the crime is criminals, victims, crime control agents, and every citizen, and the significance and criminal activities against the views of the consequences of crime policy, or even political contemporary society.
