Abstract
The world is in a constant state of change facing the reality of “what is effective and productive today, may not be effective and productive tomorrow” upon us. This is not a new concept. This is a reality that organizations throughout the world have been confronted with for many years: How to maximize the potential of all current and future employees for the organization to operate most effectively and efficiently (Brown & Harvey, 2006).
This dissertation looks into the selection and recruitment process in an evaluative manner. It takes into account the organizations which apply the recruitment and selection strategies and will illustrate this assessment by considering the case of Tesco in the application of these strategies in the corporate world. The discussion will be supported by the implications of employee rewards, strategic management, and employee relations in the organziation.

This chapter will provide the background, objectives and the layout of the entire dissertation. It will focus upon the aims, objectives and the research questions that will be studied in the research.
Background
The world is in a constant state of change facing the reality of “what is effective
and productive today, may not be effective and productive tomorrow” upon us. This is

confronted with for many years: How to maximize the potential of all current and future
employees for the organization to operate most effectively and efficiently (Brown &
Harvey, 2006).
This phenomenon of maximizing the human resource development process
recognizes that the number one component of success in an organization is not money,
products, location, or any other tangible asset, but the employees and their flexibility in
the workplace. People are the most important resource in an organization and the most
integral part of organizational growth and success (Sparrow, 1998).
Walker (2001) stated, “The key competitive difference in the 21st century will be people. It will not be process. It will not be technology. It will be people” (p. 1). Based on population forecasts and changing demographics, these people are becoming an increasingly diverse ...
