Abstract

Knowledge based on research is the most characteristic asset that universities have to share. The traditional approach has been simply broadcasting the outcomes of research. The psychologists Bandura, Derrick Bell and Nel Noddings have participated in a far more sophisticated and efficacious form of outreach in which their path breaking research on influencing human behavior is reinforced by multi-disciplinary and multi-investigator research in aid of writers, actors, and communication specialists. Research identifies critical issues and illuminates the causes and a condition surrounding them, guides the planning of responses, and tests their efficacy. Research-based outreach needs the theoretical and methodological devices of a multi-disciplinary team.

Introduction

Universities reside in tension between the isolated contemplation of the monastery and the hectic exchange of the marketplace. Universities emerged in twelfth-century European cities and towns, finally displacing monasteries and cathedral schools as hubs of discovering, and expanding the curriculum to prepare future medical practitioners, solicitors, rulers, and warriors as well as clerics (Haskins, 1923/1957).
