Introduction

John Steinbeck, in his short Story "The Chrysanthemums" depicts the tests of a woman trying to gain power in a man's world. Elisa Allen endeavours to characterise the boundaries of her function as a woman in such a shut society. While her natural environment is depicted as a device for communal repression, it is through environment in her flower bed where Elisa profits and displays off her power.
