The Brutal Truth

Theme of the article and author's argument

Stewart Patrick in his article The Brutal truth highlighted the sufferings of many nations around the world in the name “Age of Failed States” in the past 20 years. Failed states refer tote the social, political and governmental chaos in a country that leads to internal calamities and public outburst. United States administrations became involved in the global conflict by a number of dysfunctional countries, after continuous suppression and confrontation of the Soviet Union. Such political issues dominate the US foreign policy. It all started in early 1990s when a several cases of internal violence and genocide appeared in Rwanda and Yugoslavia. Foreign policy proposed Failed States Index in 2005 and funds to maintain peace among the countries were considered. Yearly analysis of FSI suggested that failed states threaten the international security, however, the worth these failed states have for the world the world should be considered, and efforts should be incorporated in order to ease the suffering of the common man. These are a number of examples like, Zimbabwe and Nigeria, in the article which clearly supports the fact that governmental and political failure results in human suffering (Patrick, Pp. 1-5).

Failure of a state has a direct impact on the inhabitants of that country. When the government is unable to administer its primary function the general public has to pay the ultimate price. Most of the top dysfunctional countries of the world, in the rating of FSI administer internal violence, social injustice and egregious calamities. These discrepancies does not only results in political and social aspect of the country but also issues relating to healthcare, education, food, gender discrimination, sexual abuses, lack of modern technology, epidemics and various other horrors of life. International community needs to implement effective strategies to revitalize humanity. Something has to be done, and remedies should be incorporated to ease the suffering of the general public, who is the unworthy victim of these disasters.

Impact over international system

Political instability and governmental disability leading to failure of the states does not only affect the internal decorum of the country, but also have global impact. It is widely considered that what happens in failed states and to its people is only for that region. International players are not affected by their domestic issues. Issues like terrorism, drug trafficking, civil wars, political violence, infection/ diseases, human trafficking, environmental crises and mass migrations resulting from local calamities, certainly affect global and international concerns. These and many other issues prevalent in a failing country will affect international considerations. When failing counties and ensured of their political dysfunction, people or better be considered as a few privileged, which get their chance to relocate themselves and their families, are a burden or threat to neighboring countries. Refugee rehabilitation and sustenance is then a global concern.

The Author uses an example of Al-Qaeda's domination in Afghanistan, which is a global threat. Terrorism is considered the most leading byproduct of failed states. When political and governmental influences are insufficient ...
