Introduction

The term democracy is one of the most prevailing concepts in the contemporary political vocabulary; as it has played an essential role in the development of the modern Western civilization. It is a globally recognized concept which is dependent on the common values shared by all the individuals in a country, regardless of their social, political and economic differences. Hence the concept of democracy is not just limited to a form of government; rather it is also an ideal that must be followed by the citizens of the country. As an exemplary democracy; helps to preserve and promote the basic rights of all the individuals; in the social, economic and political perspective (Hakim, 2003). It provides a platform for the government to unite the entire population, through a sense of national unity and patriotism. When all of the classes attain an equal opportunity to share the national resources, a healthy spirit of entrepreneurship is developed in the country. In the developed countries such as The United States and various western countries, the democratic forces have a considerable influence over the socio- economic aspects.

Capitalism has been the main contributor in the success of the Western Civilization. This concept is based on the ideals of free market and entrepreneurial endeavors by the residents of the country. The success of Capitalism is dependent on the availability of an appropriate social, political and economic environment in the country. Democracy can help create an adequate environment that will help foster the growth of the capitalistic forces through the country. Hence this form of government is not only significant in bolstering the national unity and patriotic influences in the country; it also helps to fuel the growth of capitalistic business activity.

American Democracy

America is one of the very few nations in the world who has only experienced one form of government, throughout its history. This country was formed on the principles of equality, and it never had the influences of Monarchy, Feudalism or Church aspects. The spirit of freedom and along with the availability of ample amount of fertile land presented US as a land of opportunity. Throughout its initials days of formulation, the American society was never polarized with huge gaps between the wealthy and impoverished class. The gap between the wealthy and the poor that existed in America early days was considerable lower than the rest of the Western countries at the time. One of the greatest strengths of the democratic government of United States throughout its history has been the strong middle class. In the days after its establishment; the strong US agrarian middle class fueled by the spirit of entrepreneurship, was the strongest asset of the country.

Alexis de Tocqueville the influential French political thinker stated that; the success of a democratic nation is not judged by the fortune that it holds, rather the ability of wealth to be spread among several individuals.
