Systems thinking is the defined as, the process of finding out how different processes inter-dependent within a system as a whole (Midgley 2003, p.93). The concerned systems include; employees, structures, and functions that work together to decide the future of an organization. Systems thinking provide you with a new perspective and a list of tools that you can use to solve the most difficult problems of your organization. It has the ability to provide a clearer picture of reality. It approaches the problems as part of the overall system rather than treating them as a specific part. This enables to in contributing for the success of the organization.
It approaches a problem in cyclic manner rather than linear. Systems thinking can be open system or closed system. A closed system inputs are the one that are provided once and are constant. Whereas; an open system inputs admits additional inputs from internal and external environment (Hickie 2003, p.38). Since TGL has various central departments such as; accounting, marketing, sales, HRM, that interact with each other within the organisation's boundaries and its external environment such as; retailers, customers, shareholders and sellers; therefore, it is classified as an open system.
Key Work Processes
TGL has a number of central departments, namely; Accounting, Marketing, HRM, Design, Sales, Purchase and Warehousing, Manufacturing, Logistics and Dispatch. It buys products from a variety of suppliers, such as fabric suppliers, etc. Each system has various inputs, processes and outputs, and through identifying and mapping out each department's key work processes, it allows a more comprehensive and holistic view of the organisation's operations.
In TGL's HRM department, an input is the payment in the form of funding for Appraisal systems, training & recruitment set by the accounting department; this is processed by the department to produce the output as employees. In TGL's Marketing department, an input is the data from existing and potential customers; this is processed by the department in the form of feedbacks commercially and through media, budgets, planning and forecasting to produce the output as advertising.
In TGL's purchase department, an input is the payment for raw materials set by the accounting department; this is subsequently processed by the purchasing department as they estimate the economic order quantity (EOQ) to produce an output of purchasing a specific amount of raw materials from its suppliers. In TGL's accounting department, an input is a budget from marketing department; this is subsequently processed by the department as they estimate payments and reporting to produce output as payment orders and accounting information.
Relevant Computer Software
It is essential to find relevant computer software for automating the work activities of these work processes. Good networking software is the one which has the ability to integrate the organization by running across various departments. The following software companies allows business process re-engineering that customises and allows their systems to integrate into existing operations and manufacturing systems for TGL including features like ERP, HRM and ...
