Introduction

The world has drastically changed from ancient times to date. Not only has the shape of the world evolved with respect to technology and the life style of its inhabitants but also with respect to the way, individuals along with their organisations worked in order to accomplish a common goal. One does not even need to refer to ancient times to draw out the differences between the ways organisations and employees carried out their activities; technology has played a pivotal role in delivering these new norms and practices.

Overview of the Case

The case has clearly illustrated the current scenario of teleworking with the past. The case has taken assistance of a survey, carried out by Ruiz and Walling (2005). The survey denotes the significant increase in the number of the teleworkers in just a time span of less than a year that is, from 1997 to 2005. In 2005, the teleworkers comprised of almost eight % of the total workforce of UK. The survey further identified the two main segments of teleworkers, one which primarily worked at the homes, and other whose premises or locations were varied, but were still using home as a base. The ratio of individuals using home as a base was greater than the actual home based.

Even the characteristics of teleworking varies to a considerable extent; it is a broad view that numerous organisations hire employees and they perform their designated tasks from home, and are connected to their firms via phone, fax etc for constant assistance and supervision. However, by 2005, more than half of the whole teleworkers were found out to be self-employed, and even that ratio was dominated by male workforce.

Teleworking is gaining its pace on a continual basis, and it is more prevalent in older individuals than younger, due to various reasons. The nature of the job or occupation is also pivotal in increasing the number of teleworkers, with the highest being in skilled trade. The self employed builders present a totally different picture of teleworking than what was perceived to the past (Zbar, 2002. P.148).
