This research paper examines the Narrative Family Therapy model? as applied to a specific family problem. The presenting problem (success of teen suicide) and the family therapy model are connected to Narrative Family Therapy model that is appropriate treatment for teen suicidal problem. The rate of teen suicide in adolescent males has tripled between 1980 and 2000. Suicide rates for teen females have increased between two to three fold. he revolutionary changes proposed and created by the narrative movement in the field's self-concept and mission have met with surprising silence from most of the family therapy establishment with the exception of Minuchin. There have been striking increases in suicidal behaviors among African American males? Native American males and children under 14. Thousands of teenagers commit suicide only in United States alone. There are aspects of the revolution that might be worth a second look.
Minuchin hinted at one of these in his critique? but it was lost on the respondents because his primary focus was on whether it is family therapy when you work with only one person? and on critiquing specific narrative therapists? performances? two of whom were respondents. In 2003? more adolescents died from suicide than AIDS? cancer? heart disease? birth defects and lung disease. Suicide claims more adolescents than any disease or natural cause. (Carlson? 55-53)

Last year one my friends attempted to commit suicide. His family problem was the main reason for suicide. Their parents often fight in front of their children. They never take care of their children appropriately. So my friend was basically sick of his life and daily fights of his parents. So he decided to commit suicide? but fortunately his other friends including me made him realized the suicide is not the solution of your problem? in fact it will create more problems for your family. One of the most revolutionary aspects of this new narrative phase of family therapy is that the family has become off-limits as a focus for factors that cause or maintain problems. Considering that much of family therapy's history until the nineties was spent trying to identify and change such factors? that are a big shift.
The focus on family relationships had its negative consequences. There are good reasons to shift away from perspectives that made families objects of pathology detecting? made them feel blamed? guilty? and defensive? and left therapists in the same comfortable position of detached expert evaluator that still dominates much of the mental health field. Also? because family therapists ignored the degree to which families' views of themselves are affected by our culture's views of them? family members often had little perspective regarding their hopelessness and poor self-concepts. As Robert-Jay Green (1998) writes? family therapy mostly took a neutral position regarding?
