Technological and Natural Hazard

A Look at Natural Hazards and Floods In the United States

Natural and the Technological are the two type of disasters which are considered as a more damaging and lay severer consequences on the entire humanity. Natural phenomena such as rain or wind, they become natural disasters when they exceed a limit of normal, usually measured by a parameter. This varies depending on the type of phenomenon such as the Richter scale for earthquakes, scale for hurricanes, etc. The effects of a natural disaster can be amplified due to poor planning of human settlements, lack of safety measures, contingency plans and early warning systems, among others, so that sometimes the boundary between natural disasters and disasters man gets a little fuzzy.

Aside from the institutional capacity to reduce disaster risk group, they can trigger other events that will reduce the chance of surviving it because of gaps in planning and security measures. A classic example is earthquakes, collapsing buildings and houses, leaving people trapped in the rubble and broken gas pipes can ignite and burn it to the injured under the rubble.

Human activity in areas with high probability of natural disasters is known as high risk. High-risk areas without instrumentation and appropriate measures to respond to natural disasters or reduce their negative effects are known as areas of high vulnerability. To the United States are relatively frequent attacks afflicting various natural elements such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, severe storms, tsunamis, etc. With regard to flooding, they (like drought) occur in the country is not so often, however, if it's, you leave behind a fairly serious consequences and destruction. For example, it is still impossible to forget the terrible flood of 1927 and 1993, considered the most powerful that has ever happened in the United States.

Often the cause flooding in the U.S. hurricanes also contributes to the special topography of some parts of the country. Thus, during the long rainy canyon can instantly fill with water, exceeding the permitted level. Natural disasters have different origins: the nature and partly because of pollution caused by man himself. Several factors can lead to loss of land, not only is the pollution and not the internal motion of the earth which gives rise to all the natural disasters we witnessed in this period.

Earthquakes are a manifestation of the surface of the earth by vibration. These vibrations are caused by the passage of waves through the earth plates. These seismic waves are produced when some form of energy stored as elastic strain, chemical energy, or gravitational energy is released suddenly.

The last big enough natural disaster was the flooding in the U.S. in May 2011. Again, the reason was the famous Mississippi River, which again several times up the water level and flow rate increased. The flooding has become one of the largest in the last ten years and was recognized as the largest flood in U.S. history (Juan 2006, pp. 44).
