Teaching Christian Education

Introduction

The purpose of human existence and of all creation is to worship, love and serve God. Thus, it is essential for people to understand the teaching of God and obey His commands. God is the Creator of all things and hence to celebrate and declare His name and His way through understanding His teachings (Yount,2008). Therefore, in order to live righteous life according to God's will, it is imperative for all to get Christian education for developing better understanding of Christian faith. Learning Christianity and getting knowledge about Christian beliefs will allow the believers to achieve spiritual growth. People grow physically by default; however, to grow spiritually if the choice of person (Wilkinson,2003). Humans have been Christians for years, but they have failed to improve or change as they are unable to follow the commands of their Lord. Therefore, it is important to get Christian education for bringing continuous improvement and to grow spiritually (Lawson, Choun,1992).

History of Christian Education

The purpose of teaching Christian education is to gather information and knowledge about Christian beliefs and to guide humans to live their lives according to the teachings of Bible and the way Jesus lived His life. The history of Christian education in America dates back to the 1700s (Höhne,2010). Quakers, Mennonites, Presbyterians, Catholics and Baptists, were some of the early settlers in America that devoted significant efforts to provide Christian education to their children through Christian schools that were formed with the objective to provide Christian education. Since then there has been rapid increase in college, universities and schools that do not only provide religious education but consequently a diverse curriculum (Lawson, Choun,1992).

These Early Settlers in America desired to provide their children with the best of religious education. Many of their children were taught religious education through private tutors. People were seeking to achieve religious freedom to successfully implement teachings of Christianity in their lives. With this increased for Christina education many of the schools were based on the Christina faith. As education plays a significant role in human life it also became important in colonial America to provide biblical teaching. The first school in America was started by the church; the main purpose of this school was to provide Christian education (Varet,1678).

1647 School Law

Base on the Old Deluder Satan Act, the 1647 School Law was passed, which stated that there should be teaching, reading and writing of scriptures for students in a school setting. After which Public schools were formed, the ultimate objective of these schools was to teach children Christianity (Lawson, Choun,1992). The law was formulated with the belief that Satan wants people to remain in ignorance and hence due to lack of knowledge they will they will remain in bondage. Therefore, because of this sentiment people were motivated to build Christian schools, this acted as the driving force for emergence of Christian schools, colleges and universities (Barclay,1959).
