Maathai founded the movement of the Green Belt (Green Belt Movement) in 1977. She began by planting seven trees on Earth Day to honor the women who run the environmentalism of Kenya. This movement, supported by the Kenyan across the country, has planted over thirty million trees, to prevent soil erosion. In 1997, Kenya's second multiparty elections were marred by ethnic violence.
