Sustainable Urban Drainage System in Coed Darcy
Introduction
The population of the world is increasing at a rapid pace and hence the need to accommodate the increasing population. The governments of different countries are also giving significance importance to the issue of accommodating rapidly growing population. Research and development professionals are also coming up with different solutions so as to provide workable ideas in this regard.
When addressing this issue, some basic points need to be kept strictly in mind. One of such points is the basic necessities of all the human beings that include food, shelter and clothing. All the humans need these basic necessities and therefore these factors should be given proper attention. As mentioned above, the growing population demands for growing accommodation arrangements. As a result of this rapid expansion in the population, more and more residential projects are being worked on so as to cater the need of shelter.
Shelter simply does not mean accommodation, but also the associated needs of it. These include electricity and water drainage systems as well. Electricity has now become a common need of the human beings, especially wherever it is available. The other need is the drainage of wastewater that is produced by the residential blocks and communities. Storm water also adds to the need of waste water drainage system. Usually, the management of wastewater and the relevant infrastructure faces a number of problems due to varying quality of water, habitat and flow stress (Ashbolt et.al, 2001, pp. 289-316)
A number of consultancy organizations are engaged in the business related to infrastructure development. Atkins is also such an organization that is working on projects that range from transport infrastructure in the UK to high rise buildings in the Middle and Far East. The firm is providing consultancy services to St. Modwen Developments which is a development company that is engaged with a number of government and private sector organizations to work on a number of regeneration projects. One of the ongoing projects of St. Modwen is redevelopment of Coed Darcy that is a former oil refinery of British Petroleum in South Wales into an urban village. It is going to be the first urban village in Wales that is truly sustainable.
Discussion
In order to make Coed Darcy a sustainable village, St. Modwen needs to consider a number of factors and issues. One of them is the impact of changing climate on the infrastructure. The greenhouse gases play a significant part in changing the climate and Carbon is the largest constituent of greenhouse gases. Therefore, Atkins has decided to come up with Carbon critical design.
One of the infrastructure development works that will be carried out in the Coed Darcy is ...
