This paper intends to discuss the various structural categories explored by Rainey in his book “Understanding and managing public organizations” of 2009. This comparison of various structural categories to matrix and process designs reflect the fact that organizations establish structures to divide and then coordinate work within and among different units through the design of structural categories (Rainey, 2009). Moreover, utilization of these structures in public sector organizations will be seen.
