In a contemporary business most of the organizations do strategic planning because strategic plan are visionary, conceptual and directional in contrast to an operational plan, which are likely to be shorter term, tactical, tightly focused, implemental and measurable. A strategic plan is realistic and attainable.

An organization's strategic plan should not be confused with a business plan. A former is likely to be a very short document whereas a latter is likely to be much more substantial and detailed. A former provides a foundation and framework for a latter.
