Story of Shirley Jackson's "Lottery", ironically, makes the lottery a bad meaning. Lottery in this story is used for the public stoning, in contrast to the first thing that comes to mind of the reader, when they think of winning the lottery, large sums of money. Many characters are introduced in this story. Flat characters are at the beginning of history, or the creation of stones and add to the mood of the story. "People began to gather, surveying their children, speaking of planting and rain, tractors and taxes."
