Statistical Analysis of College Football Coaches Winning Percentage related to Years as College Coach



Executive Summary

Performance of team players varies from year to year; there is no assurance of same performance level in every event. Winning depends on many factors. Majority of them are intangible in nature. College football team coaches get terminated because they don't win enough matches in series. Factors may include current college team performance, team player retention, which is mitigated by the decision makers' expectations about performance. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the largest organization governing college sports. This network represents over 1,200 schools and is divided into three divisions. This research paper explores the impact of years as college coach on college football coaches winning percentage.

Analytical methods that have been used in this used to examine the data include independent sample t-test, correlation between variables. Positive correlation results show that College Football coaches winning percentage strongly relate to years as college coach. Introduction

There has been a great debate regarding the performance of teams in events and impact of external factors in influencing the team win rate in an event. Much literature has focused on whether teams with higher salaries perform exceptionally well in an event or not? Many researchers feel that teams having high salary and budgets win more games compare to other teams having less budget. However, performance of team players varies from year to year; there is no assurance of same performance level in every event. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of college football teams and impact of coach experience and association with the teams on winning percentage of teams. Winning depends on many factors. Majority of them are intangible in nature. However, tangible factors also account a major proportion in determining the winning rate of teams.

Description of Study Motivation

Few sports generate as much controversy as college football. Everything seems to be constantly in ?ux; players come and go, as do rule changes, conference alignments, and methods for determining postseason berths and national champions. Certain college coaches, like Bobby Bowden of Florida State and Joe Paterno of Penn State stand ?rm against the constantly changing tides; but for every Bowden or Paterno, there are dozens of other coaches whose jobs are traded like collectible cards. College football team coaches get ?red because they don't win enough matches in series. However, this statement obscures the fact that some very interesting factors impudence these institutional decisions. Such factors may include current college team performance, team player retention, which is mitigated by the decision makers' expectations about performance, the allegiances and values of the decision maker, the availability of alternative players, and the coach experience.
