Statistical Analysis of Microfracture Surgical Technique
Statistical Analysis of Microfracture Surgical Technique
Introduction
This paper explores the fundamental of surgery techniques related to its effectiveness on athletes. Articular cartilage lesions problem is very common in athletes. The study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the surgical procedure through a minimum 2-year follow-up of patients by subjective rating, activity-based outcome scores, and the ability for postoperative participation in high-impact, pivoting sports.
This study relates to investigating the impact of Microfracture surgical technique on athletes performance after recovery from injury. Data was collected for two phases, i.e. preoperative and post-operative patient based clinical ratings of knee function. Two scales were used to determine the efficiency of the surgical technique. These include Brittberg Grading Scale and Tegner Rating of Activity Level. In order to assess the effectiveness of surgical technique in treating the cartilage lesions, this paper examines how does the rating on each scale differs. In addition, it also identifies the impact of external variables on the measuring scale scores.
Research Variables
Eight variables were included in the study that examined the characteristics of athletes who pass through surgical process for the treatment of lesions in the knee. These variables include the age of the athlete in years, location of the lesions (include medial femoral condyle, lateral femoral condial, and troclea), duration of symptoms of lesions in months, pre-surgery and post-surgery rating on the Brittberg Patient Score, pre-surgery and post-surgery rating on the Tegner Rating of the Activity Level, and reporting whether patients resumed high impact sports activity after treatment or not. Brittberg Patient Score measured the effectiveness of surgical treatment as poor, fair, good, and excellent; whereas, measured the effectiveness of surgical treatment on a scale of ten.
Research Hypothesis
Research hypotheses that have been examined in this research are given below.
Hypothesis 1a: Rating on Brittberg Patient Rating Scale for the presurgery and post-surgery is equal
Hypothesis 1b: Rating on Tegner Rating of Activity Level for the presurgery and post surgery is equal
Hypothesis 2a: Average rating on post-surgery Brittberg Patient Rating Scale for the medial femoral condyle, lateral femoral condial, and troclea are equal
Hypothesis 2b: Average rating on post-surgery Tegner Rating for the medial femoral condyle, lateral femoral condial, and troclea are equal
Hypothesis 3: There is no statistically significant between age or durations of symptoms of patients who returned to high-impact sports compare to those who did not return
Hypothesis 4: Age and duration of symptoms does not have any influence on post-surgery Tegner Rating Scores
Analytical Strategy
Multiple statistical tests have been used to test the above stated hypothesis. Each with its own relative significance defines the accuracy of the principle approach for reliability and validity of the test. In order to test the hypothesis 1a and 1b “Paired sample t-test” has been used due to its relevancy with the specified objective of the propositions. Paired sample t-test statistically test group comparisons of variables. This form of the test is appropriate to make a comparison in the means of two variables for a single group (Bernard, ...
