Internal Oppression

Introduction

Mutual respect, tolerance of "the Other" and the understanding of "otherness" is not given automatically at birth, they become part of human relationships under the influence of various internal and external circumstances. The problem of "color separation line" has always been a delicate and sensitive issue in relations between whites and blacks in America. Social phobias have turned it into a tight knot of contradictions, trauma and taboo. Nowhere racism was not as disastrous as in the private lives of people of different skin color, because they involved a lot of humanitarian issues and have led to very serious consequences.

The drama of interpersonal relations of white and black, poisoned by racism on the part of society, has opened up in the African-American literature until the early 1960s. When the race issue has become central to the whole nation. The primary issue on the agenda was the genuine equality of black and white, men and women, people of different social status and sexual orientation. The civil rights movement exposed the tragic situation of people of different skin color who dared to challenge entrenched views (Mullaly, 2010).

African-American Struggle

I cannot say that this topic was new to the literature, but in the preceding period, it is usually addressed in the works of the "southern school" American novel, and in some Hollywood films, reflecting centuries of accumulating prejudices and biases. The relationship between the oppressor and the oppressed fit into a clear pattern of power relations, with its binary oppositions, when the white was seen as normative, and the value of the white men were perceived as the value of the whole society. The love between people of different skin colors show up as a source of trauma and suffering, and inevitably led to tragic consequences. Only during the Second Black Renaissance, it was transformed into a force which liberates liberating and personality, although the process was interpreted as an agonizing and painful.

An original pioneer of topics in African-American literature has become an outstanding writer, journalist and social activist, James Baldwin, whose role in shaping the identity of African-Americans by various reasons remained undervalued. For him, the dominance of one party in a love relationship between people of different races was a reflection of the power structure of society with its hierarchical organization. Deeper than any of his contemporaries, he penetrated into the tragic situation of two people separated by skin color. His heroes are trying to overcome the barriers that stand in the way of loving hearts, and learn to accept "otherness" as a fact that gives them the strength to withstand the brutality of prejudice and racist society. Love helps them to not only survive but also to maintain a sense of honesty, even in a hostile environment.
