Society and Marriage Today

Introduction

Marriage is a sacrament and is, by its very nature above human law. It was instituted by God, as subject to the Divine law, whish is why it cannot be overridden by any law. In fact, those who marry do so at their own will, but must assume the contract and its obligations unconditionally. Marriage is a natural in purpose, but divine in origin. The human law certainly recognizes marriage, but marriage not having been instituted by man, such a law cannot override the essential properties that marriage holds.

Marriage is regulated by various legal, social and religious norms. The legal standards governing such matters of marriageable age, divorce and inheritance. The social norms are reflected in the choice of partner, which is today still often determined by sectarian, rank and tenure considerations (Schofield, p 98).
