Introduction to research
Innovations in the technological world have revolutionized the way internet is used. Internet is now not just a tool for storage and access of information. It has also revolutionized the way people communicate and interact with each other. The social media phenomenon on the internet has taken the entire world into its grasp. Hundreds of millions of people use social media to interact with each other. Sites, such as, Facebook, Twitter and Myspace are used daily to socialize electronically and build strong relationships (Boyd & Ellison, 2007). The websites have generated appeal by creating tools for creative and better social networking experience. Users can send messages to anyone on the network, they can upload their photos, post anything that they like to and see what others are doing.
The population of users on social media networks is largely based on college students. A survey commissioned by Cisco, UK found out that nine out of ten British students use social networking sites daily. Students are continuously using social networks for communication and finding it easier to communicate electronically rather than in person.
Confidentiality issues
The social media provide easy access to personal profile of any user. Some of the questions in this questionnaire are sensitive and controversial in nature. To save the questionnaire from any biasness and to produce authenticity, names, class, and contact numbers have not been asked by the participants.
