Discussion
Cigarette smoking is injurious for health. Smoking is most common form of addiction. Research shows that more than 17 million people in UK over the age of 16 are regular smokers. Smoking also seems to be responsible for disorders of a number of sites along the alimentary canal, while weight control of adults and adequate growth among unborn babies are other important links between smoking, nutrition and health(Bal, 2000).
Smoking appears to affect nutritional requirements and utilization of nutrients in the body and cigarette smokers often have quite different eating habits when compared with non-smokers.
Keeping this in view the governments and health originations are implementing some measures to prevent the cigarette smoking. One way to reduce cigarette users is to increase the cost of cigarette(Keeler, 2003). Studies focusing on how changes in price affect cigarette consumption often estimate the price elasticity of cigarette demand (the percentage change in consumption associated with a 1% change in price. Such studies have shown that increases in cigarette taxes are an effective tool in reducing consumption(Sung, 2004). Social circumstances, such as policies establishing smoke-free workplaces and restaurants and aggressive media campaigns stressing the dangers of environmental tobacco smoke, also affect cigarette consumption (Manley, 2005). For example, limitations on places where persons can smoke amplify the opportunity costs of smoking and modify its altitude of social unacceptability.
