The explanation of “What it's like to be a Black Girl” by a great poet Smith elevates the racial discrimination with black women in U.S they were sexually abused and enslaved by the White American and treated like animals. In this poem, she gives an idea how a black woman is surviving the cultural and racial discrimination of America and struggling for her rights. (Patricia, 1955)
Both poets discussed the issue of racism, sexism, and cultural discrimination in United States. Smith discussed the issues with black women. Contemporary racism is an ideology built on a liberal economic model that has its roots in the process of colonization and conquest of Africa and America, marking the beginning specifically with the transatlantic trade of African people that were turn into slaves for "development" and exploitation of resources in America. Thus, racism is based on the economic, ideological building cultural and social justifications for placing the white race, as a prototype of the human and therefore superior to all the different ethno-racial groups, particularly the people of African origin.
Which two of the poems I found myself fascinated with are "Child of the Americas" by Aurora Levins Morales and “What it's like to be a Black Girl” by a great poet Smith. These two poems talk about the pride of each of the author's cultures and races. The authors do not want to make excuses for being the way they are but want to tell about the pride they feel for being the way they are, and they found no way to change themselves but that history has made show them the way they are. The Smith and Morale's are great poets of their time and they have contributed a lot for the society and their respective communities. (Aurora, 1987)
In the poem with title of “What It's Like to be a Black Girl” and “Child of America” by Morales's both have discussed the racial discrimination and injustice caused by the White people with Blacks. They both talk about pride in their heritage, and at the same time, these poems are about the anger towards a new culture that does not seem to be understood in the fact that culture is different by nature. The authors want people to learn how to live with them and with each other in spite of the differences of race and culture. I found many similarities in their poems.
