Sleep Disorders in Children

Introduction

There are several types of sleep disorders found in children of ages 15 and below. These sleep disorders include many behavorial and physiological aspects. These aspects are measured with the help of video making, questionnaires, interviews or polysomnographic technology. These sleep disorders have a severe impact in the development of children's minds, emotional maturity, physical abilities and cognitive skills.

However, SD (Sleep Disorder) is not something uncommon, many children face problems due to such SDs. The trends and patterns of these SDs depend on psychological and biological factors that are further effected by family backgrounds, culture and society of the subjects. It is for the same reason, that to bring about a successful study or research about sleep disorders in children, all these factors must be considered. Studies have shown that about 30% of the children's population below the age of 15 are affected by such sleeping disorders. Though, many researchers claim the credibility of these researchers because of lack of consideration of several factors that could have impacted the results. Some say that about 43% or more population of children is affected by sleeping disorders; however, a large international population of children faces problems and permanent disabilities and limitations to mental, physiological and psychological growth. One of the main reasons of failure to bring about a universal research about this topic is the fact that each society or ethnic group have clearly different patterns of these disorders (Chokroverty, 2010).

EDS or Excessive Daytime Sleepiness is one of the most common sleeping disorder found in children. This disorder also causes sudden and frequent changes in moods. The mood of a person or child depends on both the quality and the quantity of sleep an individual gets. The cognitive ability of a children is severly impacted specially, the creative thinking, flexibility and capacity of abstraction is significantly found to be decreased. EDS is normally found in school going students who do not take sufficient nocturnal sleep. This inturn results in lack of attention during class lectures and poor overall performance in the school. A large proportion of students face such problems today but few interventions and awareness programs are seen in this regard (Fan et al, 2005).

Therefore, it won't be wrong to say that the impact of sleeping disorder is directly proportional to the welfare of a child. The data available about this topic is neither standardized nor easily available. Talking about other SDs such as, SHY (Sleep Hyper-Hydrosis) and SDB (Sleep Disordered Breathing) the availability of literature is even more scarce. Therefore, a this research will bring about a thorough research of the impact of these disorders in children and develop an outline of the possible impacts on the children, their remedies and causes.

Problem Statement

The prevalence of sleeping disorders among children is too much and is impacting the future of socities by impeding the healthy growth and development of children. In this paper, the impact of different SDs are ...
