The slave trade was practiced by Europeans (English, French, Dutch, Portuguese) and then by the Americans between the early sixteenth and late nineteenth century. It enabled the New World and European economies to grow rapidly between the 16th and 19th century. It is estimated that such trafficking involved 12 million Africans (Postma 2008).
