Performance assessments are useful tools for initiating changes in instruction and student learning. Large-scale assessments that incorporate performance tasks can signal important goals for educators and students to pursue, which can have a positive effect on instruction and student learning (Lane, 2006). A balanced, coordinated assessment and instructional system is needed to help foster student learning.
