Significance Characteristics of American Revolution

The great awakening was a period of religious denomination that began in the year 1720 having drastic effects on the United States. Many viewed the great awakening as the biggest event in the British North America before War of Independence (Lambert, 2001). One of the major causes of this spiritual revival was enlightenment, a notion of the European philosophers that emphasized on individual rationality and logic. The Enlightenment thinkers believed that Enlightenment was the emergence of man from “self imposed infancy”. It mainly emphasized on having the freedom to use one's own reason rather than depending on any divine authority. Moreover, during the period people started giving less importance to religious beliefs and had eventually began to depend more on individualistic approach towards salvation than the church views and ideologies.

The most prevalent impact of the awakening was the realization among the colonists who could only practice religious control over people rather than any other divine authority. It made them aware of their ability to question churches and any religious authority regarding various theological beliefs. In addition, the revivalism gave boost to religious pluralism, which meant that the colonists now had multiple denominations, which resulted into the division of many churches.

Although, the war between French and Indian had resulted into an end of the French cultural and political domination in the North America, the impact of the French and Indian war had devastating effects on the relationship between Native Americans and British authority. The British made the Native Americans pay back for supporting French in fighting against them by cutting off their supplies and forcing them to adhere to the new policies administered by the British authority.
