SHORT TERM MEMORY RECALL

Short Term Memory Recall

Abstract

This study was done to know if people would have better recall for words, pictures or both together words and pictures. Three groups of females were randomly selected for this study, each group contain four females of different age. To the first group was shown a list of fifteen words, to the second group was shown a list with fifteen pictures and to the third group was shown list with fifteen pictures and words together. The participants had one minute to see the list of items and then had two minutes to recall items from the list. The results show that participants had better recall on pictures and words shown together as just alone words and pictures. The conclusion is that shown results in this study were supported by the hypothesis in that the pictures and word together were better to remember that just pictures and words alone, but there were not much difference between pictures and words versus pictures on them own. This discovery for the same study can by use in the different situations as teaching or studying.

The study of short term memory recall of words, pictures and both words and pictures

Introduction

Memory is a coprolite with the ability to retain, store and recall information. It is very comprehensive and compelling area of psychology. Memory has different forms, process and stages of recalling information in everyday use. It is important to do scrupulous research in the different fields of memory for better understanding and management. Miller (1956) showed in his experiment that 7±2 elements can be store in the short-term memory. According to the recent estimates recall of elements is 4-5 which is lower. For increasing of memory capacity can be use process called chunking.

It has been lots of improving through recall in the short-term memory, study was done by Srivastava and Purohit (1979) and was founded that storage of pictures in the short term was higher than for words storage in the short term. A study was done by Rusted and Coltheart (1979) where group of children in the age nine were tested. A text book was given to the children and their role was read through the different passages some were just with words and some were word and pictures together. Some study was done with the participants in the classroom where other students were present and some were study was done in the room just attend participants alone with the experimenter.

It is debatable whether environment has such as influence on the recall of the items or provided material had better recall for words accompanied by pictures. The current study is similar to Rusted and Clotheart, except the participants were female adults and stayed in the hushed library environment. The present study investigated whether words and pictures can be better recall alone or both subjects together which the pictures can help to recall words better. If this hypothesis is supported it would be expected higher number of ...
