Shopping Addiction

Introduction

The shopping addiction is a mental disorder among consumers, which manifests itself as compulsive, episodic sale of goods. The person, who is addicted to shopping often, fails to recognize the problem until it has very serious consequences as other addictions as they live with shame. This problem is especially common in women 40 to 50 years and affects approximately 3% of the general population according to recent studies.

Causes

The main causes of compulsive shopping, and just the desire to fill a void, the existential and emotional with objects, as if physically they fill this void. Another probable cause of the shopping compulsion, low self-esteem of people suffering from addiction, in fact, many people were found just this added feature. The treatment of compulsive shopping, however, is psychological in origin. Ideally, you should consult a psychotherapist who also investigates the possible causes of addiction (Tavares, 23).

The treatment of compulsive shopping, as for many other disorders, it begins with recognizing the problem (which rarely occurs spontaneously in the subject), and then understand the causes triggered. Many people tend to think that it is only a disorder of women; however, some research shows that men can also be affected; they are just more reluctant to admit it (Black, 14) (Black, 14).

Effects

The habitual shopping behavior is driven by an impulse purchase and compelling urgency to buy, which although recognized as excessive by those who put it in place, is repeated until it results in harmful effects for the individual and persons connected with him. The behavior is thus maintained despite serious physical consequences, and countless failed attempts to control it and end it (Black, 14).

The problems that follow the behavior of compulsive shopping are feelings of guilt, shame, humiliation, health problems, family problems, business problems, legal and financial problems (McElroy, 26).
