Sex Offenders and Rehabilitation: Reducing Recidivism in Texas Prison Systems

Week 2 Assignment 1

The study is related to rehabilitation of sex offenders by reducing recidivism in Texas prison systems. In this context, conducting research can provide knowledge about many things which include whether to study or not to study that is being conducted is interesting, offensive, engaging, indirect, misleading or even unethical way. Thus, the study suggests the consideration of reducing recidivism among the sex offenders and determining the role the criminal justice systems involvement for prevention and also the punishment.

In the article, Desistance and Attitudes Towards Sex Offenders: Facilitation or Hindrance? by Willis, Levenson & Ward, (2010), of all offenders who have committed crimes, sex offenders are those that most concern the public and attract the most media attention. Therefore, extraordinary measures are often taken to monitor sex offenders released; special police and probation supervision, sex offender registries and community notification. It would be useful to know how often the various types of sex offenders re-offend in order to establish policies to manage them effectively.

My data is certainly qualitative and quantitative, I have conductive interviews as well as I have taken data from the management information system. In the article, Desistance and Attitudes Towards Sex Offenders: Facilitation or Hindrance?, the methodology consist of sample (N = 4724), which further consists of 10 sub-samples. The sort of sampling technique used here is the random sampling technique. In one of the first and most comprehensive studies using a general public sample, Brown (1999) surveyed 312 community members randomly selected from the electoral roll about their attitudes and anticipated behavior towards

sex offenders. The size of these sub-samples varies between 191 and 1,138 offenders who come from different parts of the United States. The offenders in these samples, after their release, are monitored for an average of seven years, some even for a time as long as 32 years. For half of these samples, we used a new conviction following a sexual offense as recidivism criterion, and a new charge for a sexual offense for the other half. These samples represented various types of offenders, some of whom had previously committed a sexual offense and other hand, incest offenders, abusers of boys and girls abusers, rapists, older offenders, young offenders and that offenders do not commit any offense in the community for a long time.

The instrument that I have used for this research is the cognitive instrument. Cognitive method is the best way to identify strengths and weaknesses(Heller,2008)

In comparison of the article, another article that assesses the therapeutic responses of psychopathic sexual offenders based on the treatment attrition, therapeutic change, and long-term recidivism of sex offenders.
