Introduction

Although the expressions "self-directed" and "self-managed" and are used often, they are seldom defined. The Industry Week and Development Dimensions International conducted a research, in 1990, on the existing practice regarding self-managed teams. The research defined it as a team of employees who undertake day to day tasks for managing themselves and the job they do.
