Scholarly vs. Popular Media Focus on Sexuality

Summary of Article 1

The research article “Pornographic exposure over the life course and the severity of sexual offenses: Imitation and cathartic effects” by Mancini, Reckdenwald and Beauregard (2012) in the journal of criminal justice works on filling the gap regarding consequences of sexual explicit material seen in videos. While there are so many researchers conducted on exposure to pornography and its consequences, virtually no research is conducted to address the effects of watching sexually explicit material at different stages of life. This research fills this gap. It studies the impact of watching sexually explicit material in adolescence and its effect in adulthood.

Method

The data was collected using a semi structured interview with sex offenders. Several questions were asked regarding their prior criminal activities, their present conviction ins such crime and also the perception regarding their offenses and victims of sexual offenses. To double check record of criminality, police records of respondents were also obtained. Several different distinctions were made to observe the effect like, victim got physically assaulted, humiliated, or drugged.

Group

The sample taken is consisted of 624 respondents who got punishment on sex crime for more than 24 months sentence in prison between the year 1994 and 2005 in a Federal Correctional Institution in Canada. About 93% of the respondents agreed to be a part of this study.

Result

Findings from the research have shown a relation of watching sexually explicit content of pornography in adolescence is associated with elevation of violence. Also, watching porn in adolescence lead to increased victim humiliation. However, in adults the relation of watching porn was not related to offensive or violent behavior.

It is argued in the article that, humans are developed in much the same way as other animals did. However, the role of society cannot be ignored. It is further argued that cultural differences are also result of the evolutionary differences. The physical and mental differences among different human beings and their subsequent mating within their own communities have brought significant differences in their sexual approaches along with their other differences in society.

The article also discusses the differences of male and female behavior with respect to pornography. It contends that, the pornography view by females reflect their long term orientation of their mating plan as contrast to men, whose pornography consumption reflects their short term plan of sexual strategy. The preference of sexual content is contended to be an evolutionary matter rather than peer-pressure.

The article contends that, females less desire for sex in society might be a resultant of their social makeup acquired through parents, society and ...
