Case Study - Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder

Introduction

Since few years, the patient Mr. ABC aged 17 had a number of symptoms such as feelings of depression and unhappiness when waking up one morning, unable to act normally while socializing or when exposed to social situations, not being able to think clearly, not having normal emotional responses, and claustrophobia. After which Mr. ABC had very little control over his feelings and emotion along with panic attacks and bizarre behavior, because of which he was facing complications in being attentive in school. This paper stands as a case study of a person named Mr. ABC who is suffering from Schizophrenia and BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder).

Discussion

For a number of years Mr. ABC had therapies like Adlerian psychology, one to one counseling, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, and, even though these therapies have for short terms helped Mr. ABC due to the presence of a person with whom he could talk; however, these therapies have been unsuccessful in curing him and the symptoms persisted to worsen and his life was disturbed because of the symptoms.

Lately, Mr. ABC consulted a psychologist, because he was quite curious to make sure that there is nothing acutely wrong with him. Mr. ABC convinced himself and he was even told that he had depression, although his symptoms would not linger on throughout his life, and he should not be depressed anymore, as Mr. ABC is able to flit from being fairly happy, extremely down or extremely angry.

After going through a couple of session each an hour long it was concluded by the psychologist that Mr. ABC has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia and BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder). This diagnosis relied on the past history of feelings, behavioral traits and actions of Mr. ABC.

The patient was relaxed for a moment, thinking that as the problem has been diagnosed there must be a cure for it too. Mr. ABC found a name for his condition while browsing a number of websites on the internet. Mr. ABC compared his symptoms with those mentioned on different websites and found them to be same, because of which he felt sad due to the fact that Mr. ABC did not really wished to have any mental disorder, and even though he desired to inform everyone regarding the diagnosis of the problem so that people would comprehend his distinctive and different personality. Mr. ABC was aware of the fact that they may appear to think of him in a different perspective, and reject him. Because of his fear towards rejection being quite strong, Mr. ABC decided to keep it to himself, informing only one of his siblings and his girlfriend.

The way Mr. ABC felt:

Mr. ABC never felt 'content and happy' from the inside. He had feeling of confusion, worthlessness, hopelessness, jealousy, being obsessive, charitable, extremely sad, empty and depressed, loving, aggressiveness, anger, temporary happiness and excitement. He used to feel any of this at any time, and frequently these feelings ...
