Introduction

This essay is about safeguarding of adults. It will discuss key issues in relation to the film "Call Me Joe". I will be using the Driscoll Teh Model (2001) of reflection. This model looks at the questions "What, So What and Now What". It will define Reflection and explain why it is important in nursing. The film reflects that the Joe is isolated, disempowered and vulnerable. Joe is not getting the person centred healthcare services as his voice is not sought or heard. The scenario in the film highlights that there is a vital need that the Joe must be provided person centred healthcare services which involves patient involvement, informed choice and control in decision making.

I believe that nursing as a profession has turned over the years. Nursing as a profession is emerging from the Nightingale era. Knowledge of cultural diversity is the key which enable better health practices to the needs of contemporary society, and this is where anthropology lends its support to the hospital. Nursing is a profession. A nurse, once registered, is professionally accountable and responsible for her actions. In the case of Joe, Nurses must have the skills to perform their role whether it is about supporting a patient to drink or eat; assessing somebody having a learning disability, giving an injection, working in an assertive outreach team in mental health requires professionalism (Lachman, 2006).

Discussion and Analysis

The analysis of the film on Joe helped me in revealing that the nurse who initiates an action must know its rights and those of others and be determined to continue its work until that it will lead to the goal. I as a student nurse will make sure that there should be open communication between the patient and nurse. This voluntary consent is a patient's right and that right should be respected. The nursing profession in the case of Joe also requires a strong interpersonal relationship with the patient. Understanding and connecting with the feelings and concerns of Joe is a skill that is a must for all nurses and well for me. I believe that I have to develop strong interpersonal skills for the sake of lifelong learning within my professional role of nursing as a student nurse. The nurses are expected to support and cater to the patient's needs. This calls for a great deal of caring, consideration, and communication with Joe, so as to make him realize that he has valid feelings and to help him to overcome the issues such as trauma, high risk of urinary tract infection (Gopee, 2001).

As a student nurse, my vision is that nursing can be defined as the set of activities for the professional care, promotion, maintenance, or restoration of optimal health for both the individual and society, based on the theoretical and methodological models.
