Everything in life comes up with an opportunity cost and in order to achieve something one has to let other go. In order to understand the culture of America I had to spend a lot of time here away from my home and my country. Months have passed but it looks like yesterday when I entered the campus filled with nervousness and anxiety. When I was coming to this country I felt that I wouldn't be able to adjust in a distinct environment but after spending some time here I was impressed by the attitude and the dignity of people I interacted with and recognized that American culture is not so different from China. Yet the American's attitude of privacy and the class management system is distinct which I will discuss later on.
Discussion
I encountered the first difference in the cultures on September 30; I couldn't access the internet through my laptop because of a copyright infringement issue. My network connection was blocked and I was warned from IT department via email regarding copyright infringement and despite of my explanation they did not believe me that I had nothing to do with it. After sometime my network connection retrieved as IT department rechecked my IP and found that my network access was blocked due to a misunderstanding. At that point of time I felt helpless and went through a mental trauma as the download and upload of any pirated products in America can lead you to fall in litigation. I also received a warning from judicial affair office which stated me as liable for copyright infringement, as of 8/7/2007 students are being sued directly by copyright holders if found guilty of suspected.
