Bruce Thomas was the seventh Earl of Elgin in 1771 at the age of five years. Lord Elgin in 1795 married Mary Nisbet of Earlton, a wealthy heiress. Elgin's appreciation for art and the British nobility led him to employ Thomas Harrison, an architect who had studied Greek and Roman styles of Greece.
